Up and running

Yes our new BBC, our Blog Book Club is up and running.

So far we have seven members, Marian, Treasa, Cathy, Marie, Lorna, Val and yours truly.

Our first book has been selected ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’, the 2007 novel by Afghan author Khaled Hosseini, as suggested by Marian.

A Thousand Splendid Suns

We will all be busy reading, ready to post our reviews midday, Easter Sunday.

Who knows, maybe this time next year our fledgling online book club might be celebrating its first birthday at the Ennis Book Festival with all the other book clubs :)

Update to above. We are now at nine members, Edie and Jenn have just joined.

  • Ooh, that is something to aim for and we can have our first bloggers meet up there too. I am really excited about this – brilliant idea Lily.

  • Lorna :) I think the BBC should be good fun

Edie, not too late at all. You are most welcome to join, you will our first US representative :) Our March book is above. We’ve already suggested two for April and May. Marie suggested ‘Brooklyn’ by Colm Toibin and Treasa suggested ‘Let the Great World Spin’ by Colum Mc Cann.

I haven’t read this book so looking forward to it. I haven’t been a member of a book club before either, so it’s all new to me.
Well done for setting it up :D

  • I started “A thousand splendid suns” yesterday morning and if I hadn’t been obliged to come to work this morning, I’d probably be finished by now, I cannot put it down. I love it when you find a book that you cannot put down.

PS I bought the next books (Brooklyn and Let the Great world Spin) on The Book Depository website for less than €12 for the two, delivery was free. So if anyone needs to get them, that is fantastic value. Unfortunately, I doubt that my local bookshops would be able to match this price.

Marian, I felt exactly like that when I was reading one of the Larsson trilogy. I wanted Monday not to follow Sunday. Another Saturday would have suited me perfectly :) I’m glad you suggested ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’. I’ve read and really enjoyed it but am happy to read it again. (I was afraid I mightn’t have been able to find my copy but I did.)

I’m interested in the price you paid for the other two – that is cheap. I have Brooklyn (unread) but have to get the other one.

  • Lily – it turns out my Mum has this book anyway, so I’ll totally join in on this one!

Hi Lily, when I have my blog up and running I would love to join BBC too. Our book club read “Let the great world spin” last month. This month it is “Lucky” Alice Sebold author or “The Lovely Bones”. I read Stieg Larrson’s trilogy and loved them but yes they needed serious editing.
I am hosting the next meeting and would love a book about something happy or a gripping thriller (not romance).Any ideas??
One advantage of meeting each month is that you get to chat, review the book and have a few glasses of wine.
For your cookery section – can I have suggestions for nice appetizers for book club please!!!

Una, would be delighted for you to join the BBC, really looking forward to you getting that blog up and running. I’ll think about the food for you. I just went back on my reading section Embers, The Remains of the day, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, The Outcast, Tenderwire are all good reads.

Marian, Thanks for the links. I hadn’t use that website before. All the lads buy books all the time on the web. I tend to still be a traditionalist but you certainly have shown me bargains
