Change of direction

I’ve been neglectful of the cookery experiment for a number of weeks. Various things, Christmas, busy at work, Young Scientist, etc all kept me from experimenting. Well normality now seems to be returning.

Though I’m always glad to get a break from cooking, I actually miss it a lot when I am away from it for any length. The break however helped me re-think my experiment. I’m going to change direction. Instead of doing all of the Avoca Cafe Cookbook, I’m going to emulate Kitchen Diaries Challenge and do about ten recipes from each of a number of books. It should be more interesting for both you, the reader and for me. I’m choosing books that have interesting everyday recipes. I’ll continue like before and serve them to whatever guinea pigs happen to be around and we’ll rate them using our new simpler rating system with just three categories:

  • Exceptional
  • Definitely repeat
  • Forget about
  • The books I’ve identified for the moment are as follows:

    Jim’s Kitchen by Jim Tynan

    Jim's Kitchen

Eat Good Things Every Day by Carmel Somers

    Eat Good Things Every Day

    Roly’s Cafe and Bakery

    Roly's Cafe & Bakery

    Cornucopia at Home

    Cornucopia at home

    Avoca Cafe Cookbook

I’ll finish ten from it, I’ve eight already done. I’ve posted a picture of this book before!

Please feel free to suggest others.

Let the experiment begin, I mean continue!

    • Love the idea. The Cornucopia cookbook is fab. We’re huge fans of the Raspberry & Blueberry Oat Bars. Good Luck :-)

love the idea… I enjoyed the Kitchen Diaries Challenge last year & I’m finding this year’s selection box even better for the variety, so I look forward to reading your results (especially the Carmel Somers, I was disappointed it didn’t appear in my christmas bookpile!)

    • I found your blog right after my daughter and I got back from our Christmas trip to Ireland. We went to Avoca (loved it!) and I bought a few of their cookbooks (Tea Time, Volume 1 and Volume 2). Since I’ve only made the soda bread, scones and quiche so far, I enjoyed reading your experiements so I’ll know what to expect when I finally get around to make those recipes. I’m looking forward to seeing the recipes from Cornucopia because we really wanted to eat there when we were in Dublin but we couldn’t find the restaurant. I’ll just have to live vicariously through you, as you and your experimenters enjoy the food you make.

Therese, we’ll have to try out Cornucopia’s Raspberry & Blueberry Oat Bars then!

Helen, I have you to thank for introducing me to that website. One idea leads to another, leads to … :)

Grannymar :) Watch yes, have a laugh yes, learn?

Edie, welcome to the blog. Look forward to reading from yours and of your trip to Ireland.

Marie, thank you! The experimenting has recommenced.
