Leaving Cert

An elderly woman who worked with us years ago, remarked to me one day, “Patrick (a two-year-old at the time) seems very bright’. She quickly added ‘well what would you expect, sure wasn’t Denis’s mother a teacher’.

So it seems it’s in the genes …

On the father’s side.

Yesterday I got an email at work from somebody congratulating John and jokingly asking me for the secret. I retold the ‘old wives tale’.

He quickly emailed me back to say, he was so relieved …

His children were safe, HIS mother was a teacher.

So to all you teachers out there, whilst your pay may not be assured, even your jobs may not be safe, it appears, your grandchildren are.

  • Good one! But it takes two to tango :-)

Congrats again on John’s amazing results this week.

There are no teachers that I know of in our family but lots of sleepless nights. I was always told that if you had a baby who was a poor sleeper, it was a sign of great things to follow! This thought kept me going during those long hours of darkness.

  • Well done John….

It doesn’t look as if there will any magpie grandchildren to test the theory.

One of the greatest service that any teacher can perform is to teach his or her charges to learn….to the best of their ability.

Another is to instil a love of learning…anything.

  • Well done to John,
and to yourself for teaching him to study.

Let me know if you are doing the mammy thing and collecting the newspaper clippings he’s generated. He might like the bit in the Herald AM (Dublin free-sheet) the photo about his article isn’t of him, but the fishnet and short skirt wearing models at the CSI show.

Unless he’s changed a lot in two years of course.

  • Steph, we can relate to that, though it was Denis who walked the floorboards at night more than me. Youngest mouse had us well worked out. In the night, he would call for D. From about 6 on, he reckoned I was on duty and called for me.

    Grannymar :)

Magpie 11, although I was writing that piece ‘tongue-in-cheek’, so to speak, I agree with what you say on teachers.

Will, thank you. He has changed in two years, lost the hair! His twitter avatar is the ‘old John’
